Zi C. Lin

zi-linMr. Lin is a partner in the Pasadena office of Garrett & Tully. Mr. Lin’s practice focuses primarily on business disputes, real estate litigation, and bankruptcy. He heads the firm’s bankruptcy practice group.

Mr. Lin has considerable trial and arbitration experience, and has obtained favorable results for clients in California, federal, and bankruptcy courts. Mr. Lin has represented a wide variety of clients, including:

  • Plaintiff Meadow Rain Walker in Walker v. Porsche, Los Angeles Superior Court case no. BC596011, a wrongful death action seeking damages for the death of her father, movie star Paul Walker IV. This case was resolved to the satisfaction of the parties;
  • The victorious defendants in Scher v. Burke (2017) 3 Cal.5th 136, wherein the California Supreme Court resolved a dispute between the Courts of Appeal and held that Civil Code section 1009 bars all use of non-coastal private real property, not simply recreational use of such property, from ever ripening into an implied dedication to the public after March 4, 1972, when section 1009 was enacted. This Supreme Court decision overruled three California court of appeal opinions.
  • The City of Pasadena in Roldan v. Rose Bowl Operating Company, and City of Pasadena, U.S. District Court Case no. LA CV15-09964 JAK (GJSx), an American with Disabilities Act (ADA) case. This case was resolved to the satisfaction of the parties.

Mr. Lin has considerable appellate experience. Mr. Lin has worked on appeals which resulted in published/citable opinions, including: Kwok v. Transnation Title Ins. Co. (2009) 170 Cal.App.4th 1562; Dollinger Deanza Assoc. v. Chicago Title Ins. Co. (2011) 199 Cal.App.4th 1132; Security Service Federal Credit Union v. First American Title Co., 2012 WL 5954815 (C.D. Cal. Jan. 27, 2012), aff’d Security Service Federal Credit Union v. First American Title Co., 585 Fed. Appx. 591 (9th Cir. 2014); Liberty National Enterprises, L.P. v. Chicago Title Insurance (2013) 217 Cal.App.4th 62; Stockton v. Tope (2014) 233 Cal.App.4th 437; Ash v. North American Title Co. (2014) 223 Cal.App.4th 1258; Bank of New York Mellon v. CITIBANK, NA (2017) 8 Cal.App.5th 935; and Scher v. Burke (2017) 3 Cal.5th 136.

Mr. Lin has considerable experience in bankruptcy matters. Mr. Lin represents bankruptcy trustees in bankruptcy cases and adversary proceedings. Mr. Lin also represents creditors in Chapter 7, Chapter 11, and Chapter 13 bankruptcy cases, and appeals. He is admitted to all districts of the U.S. Bankruptcy court in California.

Mr. Lin received his bachelor’s degree from the University of California, Los Angeles, and his juris doctor from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law.

Mr. Lin is rated “AV Preeminent” by Martindale-Hubbell. This rating signifies that a large number of Mr. Lin’s peers rank him at the highest level of professional excellence for his legal knowledge, communication skills and ethical standards. Mr. Lin was also rated a “Southern California Rising Star” by Superlawyers.com. No more than 2.5 percent of the lawyers in California are named to the Rising Stars list.

Mr. Lin has presented seminars on a variety of topics, including: “Advanced Title Insurance Issues” (for CLE provider National Business Institute); “The Calculation of Loss Under Title Policies” (for CLE provider Access MCLE); “Kwok Talk and Title Insurance: Termination/Continuation of Coverage under Policies of Title Insurance” (for the Los Angeles County Bar Association); the court’s perspective on motions for summary judgment/adjudication; and the interplay between title insurance and bankruptcy.

Mr. Lin serves as a planning commissioner on the Planning Commission of the City of Arcadia, and was a past chair. The Planning Commission reviews matters affecting the physical development of the City of Arcadia, including zoning, and land use.

Mr. Lin was also past chair of the Los Angeles County Bar Association Title Insurance Subsection, and serves as diversity chair of the ABA TIPS Title Insurance Litigation Committee.
